I Will Be a Hummingbird is a short story that was written and told by Wangari Maathai. Maathai was a native of Kenya who was an advocate for environmental and political issues. She is most known for the Green Belt Movement, which was created in Nairobi, Kenya. It focuses on the environment and vouches for taking the holistic approach.
The Story of the Hummingbird is about a forest fire. The fire is so strong that all of the animals in the forest are driven out by the blaze. Instead of doing anything about it, they just sit there. A hummingbird who is sitting nearby decides that he wants to do something about the fire instead of just watching his home, so he attempts to put out the fire, one drop of water at a time. The other animals still don’t help, and they tell the hummingbird that he is too little and that there is nothing that he can do to stop this fire. The bird turns around and says to them, “I am doing the best that I can.”
The moral of this short story is that you should always do what you can, because one person can make a huge impact. If there is something that you are passionate about, such as a social movement, but you do not think your contribution will help, think about the hummingbird, and know that it does.
